Iv the course of his speech on the occasion, Sir George Bowen explained the necessity for Imperial Federation owing to the rapid growth of the Colonies. In view of the approaching General Election, Hie Conservative party have decided to nominato a candidate for Midlothian, m opposition to Mr Gladtoue. The cricket match, Australians versus Lancashire, was resumed to-day at Manchester, the weather was fine, but wicket much cnt up owing to yesterday's rain. Th* Australians continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 145. The Lancashire men then went m, and were all disposed of for 46. Being 99 runs behind the Home team, they followed, aud when stumps were drawn they had scored 27 without the loss of wicket. Melbourne, Thursday. . The Premier, Mr Gillies, has telegraphed to the Agent General m London requesting him to enquire the meaning of the recent proceedings of the French warship Dives m New Hebrides, m the lacu of the aasurancrs givc*n by the French Government m regard to neutrality of those Islands.
