IN REPLY.

(TO THE EDITOR DAILY STANDARD.) Sir,— ln your issue of last, evening Mr Lmton inserts a letter accusing me of making false statements m my report of the householders' meeting;, which took place on Friday last. Mr Linton r I think, has gone a good deal out of his way to injure the reputation , of a repor. ter, who, m such capacity, is merely a machine, acted upon by what is going on around him, and who could have no possible object in f recording untruthfully. the occurrences taking place at a public meeting. It is needless for me to take up space m dealing with the accusations contained m Mr Linton's letter, as I find, on referring to my notes of the -meeting m question, that I have merely stated what actually took place and what I both heard and saw. In fact, 1 dealt rather leniently with Mr Lintpn, as .. I -notice there are a good many "hard hits" left out, which might have been embodied, and on the whole Mr Lin ton is let down very easily. As I have said before, I am, as a reporter, merely a .machine and , care not for individuals.ohe ■ straw. My duty, as such', is.plainly laid down for toe, viz., to take notice of what I see and hear going around, and report the same impartially and truthfully, even when Mr Linton is chairman. I have no doubt the scrutineers and others, who t attended, the meeting, will, if referred.' to# uphold my report as being truthful and accurate. I maintain that not one .word of, untruth appeared m the report. It is quite possible that the "excited imagination" ascribed to me may have considerably affected Mr Linton^ liuriselfv to* which may be attributted the. petulance and touchiness so distinctly apparent m his letter.— lam, &c, - : • W. U. Healy, .... Eeporter Daily Standard v
