This; speaks Very favocrably lor its progress,, and is to the effect of the various schemes for land set-v tlement how m operation. The result will be a surprise to a good many, as we think the general opinion was that the South Island was increasing m population at, a more rapid rate than the Norths but it will be seen that the reverse is the ' fact. The difference m increase, too, is very substantial, being more than half the total increase m the South Island during the five years.
