At Te:^Wairoa there has beei* a* terrible* catastrophe. The Native school-h«use was struck by lightning, and while burning was overwhelmed with torrents of hot mud and stones. Mr Hazzard and family are all dead except two eldest girls, who were rescued by Mr Lurdon pulling them tnrough the window.
Just as we were going to press the following reached vs :— Wairoa is covered with ten feet of mud, thoue distant six miles from the craters. At a distance of one mile there is a depth of thirty feet of mud. There are no hopes" for the Native settlements adjacent. _Mrs Bazzard has been rescued but is injured. Four of her children are dead.
