At a meeting sof the New Hebrides Vigilance Committee, it was decided to send petitions againat the New Hebrides annexation to the General Assembly on Tuesday. Sir George Grey is to be asked to present tie petition m the House of Representatives, and Sir Frederick Whitaker m the Legislative Council. Some quartz from the Waitak«re Ranges yielded gold and silver at the rate of 13dwt to the ounce. Shortly after two o'clock on Saturday morning a portion of W. J. Cludeadale's confectionery factory, Tuam-street, was burned down. The cause of the fire was \ supposed to be overheating one of the flues. Dunedin. Monday. Over 50 miners met on Saturday and discussed plans for getting to Kimberley. Considerable indignation was expressed at the Hero being withdrawn. No decision was come to. Kumara,. Monday. Mr J. W. Martin, contractor for' No. 2 sludge- channel, fell over a high face from a narrow foot-track into Reynolds' claim on Thursday night, and lay for four hours before he was found. It is the same place as Ryning, who was killed hy the fall, fell over. Martin has sustained a severe scalp wound, and is also much lacerated and contused. He has been taken to the Hokitika Hospital, the Kumara Hospital being without a doctor at present. Timartt, Monday 1 A meeting of policyholders m the Government Insurance Association was' held here on Saturday night, when 20 ■weire present. The meeting was unani T niously m favor of Mr Fisher's proposals. A speaker found fault with the Board's policy m buying up buildings, and said the time was come when the Association should not be so directly under Govern- 1 ment control. i
