A RATE COLLECTOR.

(to the editor daily standard.)

Sir, — I see by the la«t report ot the. Borough Council meeting m the Daily Standard, that Or Stewart has tabled a notice ef motion, That the Council take into consideration, at its next meeting the appointment of a rate-collector. Now Sir, I give Cr Stewart every credit for moving m this direction, and I think that the amount of rates m arrears ■is a reflection on all parties responsible. But, sir, is the Borough m a position to pay a rate-collector ? I Bay no. W« ard paying our Town Clerk £200 a year, and I understand he is Librarian as well, and gets paid for that also, though uomebody else does the work. Why does not the Town Clerk hunc up the rates ? I think the fact of there being some £500 or £6CO of rates m arrear is not creditable to him. And how much of that amount is recoverable? I see Mr Ward ruled that some amounts sued for last Court day .were beyond the statu- . Tory time, and deducted them accordingly. Is our Town Clerk so killed with work that be can not look after the rates ? Surely, m any case, he might sue before the time for . recovery had expired. I hope that Cr Stewart will alxo move for a return showing what amount ot rates, now appearing as m arrears, are no longer recoverable. With your permission, I 6hall have a little more to say at an early opportunity. , I am, &c, KATEfrAYfiB.
