(Correspondent of Exchange.)
Wellington, Friday. , The debate collapsed suddenly last night al half-past eleven m. a most unexpected manner, and the result of the division was, even at the last, a surprise Early m the day" the result was looked upon a« doubtful, but it was generaUy gummed that the Government would win by a narrow majority, Jant as the debate wore on, the "doubtfuls" gravi tated to the side of the Government, and when the division was taken it was found that they had given it a good majority. Mr Bryce made a powerful speech, which was well received by the House, and was followed by Mr Ballance m a speech of exceptional merit. , . Mr Macarthur m a good speech, dis, played considerable knowledge of nnance. * ■ • • ■ i.* The member for Rangitikei m his speech remarked that he had come to the conclusion that' " finance" and humbug were synonymous terms, and .strongly condemned the Minister of Public Works for his "unchivalrous" conduct m reference to the Hunterville contract. _ The troubled state of the pohcal atmosphere has given place to one of calm. The storm burst suddenly, and as suddenly has it disappeared; It is now believed that the House will proceed rapidly with business, and thai the seseion will probably terminate about the end of July. ■
