To-night the members of the Feilding Brass Band will give a farewell ball iv the Public Hall, to two of their members, Messrs Brooker and Befit, who are off to Kiniberley. The Jane Douglas will leave Poxton for Wellington, on Saturday, at 10 p.m. The date of Mr Greenwood's next visit to Faltnerston is published m our advertising columns. Mr John McLennan, of Oroua Downs, advertises to let 600 or 700 acres of turnip land, as a whole or m lot 1 ;. Mr Allingham, who has got a very, serious attack of the ailment known as '* Kimberley fever " has decided to emigrate thither, with a view to obtain a cure of the present symptoms. He has (?s.:ermiued to sell off his whole stock, and make tracks forthwith. His determination is to realise at any sacrifice, ;.nd the consequence will be that bnrgains will be the order of the day and heads of households will reap the benefit. An advertisement setting forth the above facts will appear ia our next issue. An Auckland correspondent says that remarkable success has attended the temperance branch recently inaugurated m connection with the Government Life Assurance Department. The number of policies already issued is about 3,200, and fully 500 are at present lying iv abeyance. A man and wire, named Charles and Elizabeth Tong, who are wanted on a charge of false pretences at Palmerston North, have been arrestod at Woodyille, and are now doing their sentence m the Wanganui Gaol. An Amcr'can paper pays that the Hindoos are complaining about the poor quality of idols furnished them by the Birmingham manufacturers. The idols are too ugly for even the most devout Hindoo, So largely has the traffic on the Na-pier-Tahoraito line increased that two engines are frequently laid on to draw the heavy trains required to do the work. Last night there were nearly thirty waggons on the 3 p.m train from Napier . — Examiner. At a London auction mart, the other week, Messrs Debeuhara, Tewson, & Co, offered for sale a policy m the legal and General Life Assurance office on the life of the Queeu, now m her 67th year, for £1200, together with bonuses amounting to £300, the total value of the policy being £1509 and the annual premium £27 ss. Tho particulars stated that a copy of the policy would be purchased at the sale, and* that the purchaser should be deemed to have notice of all the contents. In answer to a question from a gentleman present, ths auctioneer stated that th« policy had been m force for a good many years, as indicated by the accumulated bonuses. Although there was a numerous company present, the auctioneer failed to obtain a bidding and the policy was withdrawn. The results of the late census taken, shows the population of the electoral district of Rangitikei to be 6,320, as compared with 3,966 m. 1881. Electoral district of Manawatu 7,461, as compared with 8,810 iv 1881. That portion of tne electoral district of Foxton to the north of the Waikanae river is 3,300. The southern portion of this electoral district is included m the Wellington census district, the detailed return of which we have not received. The increase m the number of dwellings m the five years is very considerable, as the following figures will show — County of Eangitikei m 1881 the number of dwellings was 775 ; m IRB6, 1,058 ; increase! '283. •Number of dwellings m area included between Eangitikei and Waikanae rivers -m 1881 was 1,985 ; m 1886, 2,772; increase, 757. The total increase of dwellings is 1,070. The total increase of population between Wangaehu and Waikanae rivers is 4,310, the pooulation being 12,780 m 1881 and 17,090 this year. — Murton paper.
