A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was hold yesterday to consider a letter to the Minister of Public Works re extension of the Main Trunk Line from Helensville northwards to the Bay of Islands, a branch line from the M&in Trnnk Line to New Plymouth xia Stratford, a branch line fr<mi the JMain Trunk Line eastward to Napior, asking that these lines be made within five years. The letter was adopted. The Maugawhero Hotel tfifch contents waa totally destroyed by fire this morning. The loss which is estimated at £1400, is believed to be covered .by insurance. The fire was quite accidental. . Wanganu, Thurrday. Word has reached Wsinganui that Messrs Stevens and Butler, Government Land 'Purchase Commissioners, have been very successful m teceiving Mgnatures for the Wnnnarimo Block. They have gone as far as Tuuruarunie, and lounJ no diliicilty at all m obtaining or goin£ fiom place to place. 1 1 was rumoured they •were to be shot if they persisted m passing Wanganui-Otea, but this was without the least foundation.
