Manawatu Road Board.
»- The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held to-day. Present — Wardens Snelson, Pratt, Mathieson, Sly, ami Bell. Xhe Clerk rearl the gazette notice of election of members, and tho appointment of a chairman was then proceeded with. Warden Sly then proposed that Warden Pratt be elected chairman. He helie ved Mr Pratt had had a good deal of experience m road board matters. He also lived near the town, and would be abieto devote a good deal of attention to road board matters. If he' were elected to the office he (the speaker) would ren- ■ dervhiut every 'assistance m his power. The motion was seconded by Warden Snelson and carried. Warden Pratt • having taken the chair remarked that he would rather some older, member of . the Board had i been' elected. ... : | The minutes of the last meeting were then read and passed. . . . , . The. correspondence was sread. ...,._ Resolved,, on the. motion of Warden. Snelspn-rThat a general rate of jd inttia £ be struck on all rateable property m the Manawatu Road District for the year ending 31st March, 1887, and that the rate notices be at once sent out announcing that the rate is payable m one sum at the Board's office, on. the 14th day of June instant. . . Warden Snelson moved that tha Colonial Secretary be notified of the election of chairman,— Carried. Warden Mathieson handed m a letter from Mr J. Bell, Kairanga, also another letter covering a claim against the Board. . Mr Bell's letter, contained a complaint of damage to property through insufficient drainage, 3ft of water was at present time on the land. Resolved — That the secretary be in.-, structed to write and inform Mr Bell ■that at the present time of the year it was altogether impracticable to do anything m the matter, but that as Poon as possible the- Board would attend to the affair. A deputation, consisting- of Messrs Bodgers, Monk, and Basjiett, waited on the Board ■ m reference to a bridge over tiie Mongaone. stream on Cleaveley's Line, communication with the main road having been completely cut off for three weeks past. .
