The Duke of Norfolk presided at % Conservative mass meeting on lh« evening of the sth Mny, at. St. James' Hall, to protest against tho Home Rule policy of Mr Gladstone. The attendance was large. Baron Brarawell was introduced as a prominent scceder from th& Liberal party on this question. Sir Michael Hicks- Beaph and ViscouDt Cranbrook were appointed a Committee to present to Parliament a petition against th« granting of Home Kule. Tho meeting on the sth of tbe National Liberal Federation of Great Britain endorsed Mr Gladstone's policy amid the wildest excitement. . Mr Herbert Spencer and Professor Htixl«y hay« joined the Anti-Disunion Committee, the funds of which now amount to £50,000. The Earl of Eenmot'e has resigned his office under the preseut Government. . . ■ -r Numerous instances are reported of country constituencies passing Totes of want of confidence m their representatives m Parliament. Mr Jefferson Davis made a so»t of triumphal progress through the southern States lately. The people weut wild with excitement, and 10,000 persons stood m the raiu to welcome him m Montgomery on the 29th, and the way to his room m the hotel was strewn with roses. It ii> stated that the Canadian-Paoifio transcontinental railway will open for traffic m Juno next. , Mr Mills, managing Director of the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, was interviewed on bin arrival m I San Francisco, en route to Europe. H» spoke hopefully of the cable prospest to connect California with New Zealand. Four hundred Roman Catholic .priests attended a meeting at Dungau, m County Tyrone, on May 6. It was called to give expression to their views on Mr Gladstone's Home Rule policy, m compliance with tho Premier's invitation to ail bodies m Ireland to take action m the .matter. The Most Rev; Daniel •McGcitigan, D.D., Arch bishop of; Armagh,- presided.. Resolutions were adopted endorsing Mr Gladstone's policy. • ' '
