(united press association.) Bluff, Monday. The steamer Triumph arrived at 11 p.m. from Lyttelton, to load grain for Sydney, and steamed up to tbe wharf at half ebb. Auckland, Monday.. The Auckland bootmakers estimate that the new tariff will increase the cost of production by 7 per cent. The loss to tbe city through the strike was £12,000, of which £4000 was the wageß that the men would have earned. Roderick McGregor, a settler oi Whangarei, suddenly assaulted constable McDonnell, of the water police, to-day with a cudgel. He was. under the delusion that the constable had been " chasing him through the woods." MacGregOr was medically examined and sent to the Lunatic Asylum. The constable was severely hit on the head, and nis fingers were bitten while :he was arresting the lunatic. Dunedijv, Monday. The. wife of the Eev Mr Henshellwood, who arrived recently from Home, div'd suddenly last night. The cause is not known. Her husband was m the country at the tirue. Ham commenced to fall m the morning-, and has continued steadily all day. Reports from the country state that the rivers are rising rapidly, and floods are feared. Gisborne, Monday. A County Council meeting was held yesterday to decide on the course to be taken to recover money detained by Willoughby Brassey, solicitor, who was recently dismissed from the council's service. The amount is £155 paid to him on May 10th, on account of rates. Mr Brassey cashed the cheque on May 11th. On a demand being made for the money, Mr Brassey held it as alleged for his costs. He gave a cheque, but said, there was not sufficient m the bunk to meet it, as his clerk was awny with the keys of his safe. The council decided that unless the money was paid by noon on Monday criminal: jaroceedings > would betaken, ''.:.'' ChkISTCHOBch, Monday. A case of garrotting occurred, here last night. A man named Edward Desmonii was stuck up on the South Belt by four men, who held him, and went through his pockets. Two of them, Richard Chamberlan and Fredk. Porter, both well-known to the police, have been arrested. -
