Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. TUESDAY, MAY 25, 1886. THE YOGEL BEGIME.
The Evening Press thus expresses its opinion with regard to the Colonial Treasurer :— We believe if Sir Julius Yogel we allowed to have ; his own way "entirely he would hurry, the colony into reckless, not 10 say ruinous, courses; not from dishonest motive's or indiffer : ence to the public welfare, but because" ,he is over sanguine and essentially speculative and visionary. He fixes his gnze on the Object he wishes to achieve, and he takes little or no heed to the ; means :; by.f.^biokislfc 1&|f& ! achieved:. But he is not an autocrat. He is not even a very powerful constitutionalMinister. He is hedged .round, by safeguards pf^ nil, sqjrtis. ,He~isfn6t the head OfHiiGiG^imacHtr bttfc.thGuwh nominally he. has., " pre, cede.nc,e," if is 'well " known : il]at'fett§rly '-'tfite'Treinier ha^ im pressed- his views upon him with a firthness .that, admits of no resistance^ ; Th.eh, he does not command; -a majority of 'the' Legislature. He is singularly -weak m Parliament, indeed, -arid he ; knows it himself. On many occasons; last session he saw the advisability Of keeping m the background, because hefbiind his advocacy of a Government measure was more fatal to it than the fiercest attacks from the opposition benches, IHe is far more disliked by the Ministerial party than he is by the Opposition ; and this feeling extends beyond the ■ walls of Parliament to all parts of the colony. Thus it will be seen that m the Cabinet, m the Legislature and m the constituencies, Sir Julius Yogel is powerless for harm, an! is quite unable tofinfluence the couns3ls of New Zealand by his individual idiosynacracies. He is a capable and indefatigable administrator, and a politician of infinitely fertile resources, and it is difficult even for his opponents to say that he does not render good ser vice to the public m his Ministerial capacity ; but it is Well understoodj that his misguidod tendencies' -towards finlyjaited borrowingand extravagant expen,4iture . must be resolutely kept m check.
