Death of a Maori Chief.
; One of the most remarkable of the Hawke's Bay native chiefs, Morena Hawea, of Pourerere, died last Sunday at a very advanced age. Morena was .the first chief who welcomed Messrs Northwood and Nairn when those gentlemen were exploring the coast m search oil sheep country m 1848. In fact it was through Morena's and Hapuku's friendship towards Europeans that the iirst settlers were enabled to establish themselves m this district. It was Morena, who first set the example of letting his country for sheep grazing. It was lie also who hoisted the British flag .during the Hau hau war when most of . tbo other chiefs m Hawke's Bavflew the Hau hau colors at their pahs. Morena's '. {:. influence vvas of the greatest possible - assistance to the Government, who reco.^niseil his services by appointing him an Assessor, but his memory is deserving of some lasting memorial. At the time of Ills death this venerable chief wns supposed to be 90 years of age. — Napier Telegraph.
