In Memoriam.

A proposal is on foot m Wellington to subscribe towards the erection of a tombstone to mark the last resting place m the cemetery of the late Mr Peter Laing, who carried on business as baker and confectioner m the well-known Bed House m that city, for many years. Perhaps some of the subscribers .who owed ■'? long times " for bread and pastry for themselves and families, will. relieve their consciences by giving liberally. Poor old Peter Laing ! He was a goodhearted, kindly man, who, we don't think, ever sued .a man for debt m his life, and on whose good nature many imposed. Since his death some of his trade accounts have been sought to be recovered, and m some cases the " upper ten •' of Wellington were found to owe the estate amounts representing m the aggregate a large sum of money. We remember seeing iudgment recorded as-ainst one of them, a leading solicitor, bye-the bye, for close on one hundred pounds 1 And now they will ease their conscience by putting a tombstone over him, '♦ to mark his last resting place." It would have been more consistent to have paid |the man what was owing to him when he was alive. Such would also have ensured them a more gratifying meeting "on the other shore," than merely to say, "I gave five bob towards a subscription to put a tombstone to mark your last resting place . m the cemetery;" ! ■> :
