IN EXPLANATION.

("TO THE EDITOR OF TttE STANDARD.) Sir, — -I observe a local m your issue of 13th inst pointing out that m the Bulls local district the Inspector of Nuisances reported that the sanitary state of the town was very satisfactory, but adding, " and yet there has been an outbreak of diphtheria." The diphtheria ' which existed was almost certainly' (in" the opinion of the resident inedicstr-'inan) imported from outside the district, and possibly through attendance at the public school, which was therefore immediately closed. That the sanitary condition of the township as reported on by me had therefore nothing to do with the outbreak i« clearty proved by . the steps taken to eradicate, havine* proved sufficient with- ■ out any change whatever having been made m the sanitary conditions. These are, I believe, so far as I can judge from my regular inspections, very satisfactory. — I am, &c. Fredk. WJebb, Inspector Nuisances; Bulls, May 15. . [We are very pleased to hear that the sanitary condition of Bulls is so satisfactory. Naturally, we attributed the outbreak of diphtheria to its usual cause viz., neglect of sanitary measures, but it is quite possible that the cause is as alleged by the local inspector of nuisances. We only wish the sanitary condition of Palmerston North could be truthfully reported as.J'<>very.£atisfactory." Unfortunately, it is far otherwise. — Ed. M.D.S.]
