LOCAL AND GENERAL.
An amusing epistle from Michael MeFlaherty to T. Arragustin Fludd Esq, A.S.S., has been sent to us for publication, but is unavoidably held over. Breeders m this district will rogret to bear that Byloug, the property of Mr Dixon, of Turakina, is dead. Bylong died on Tuesday night, Death is supposed to have been caused by inflammation of the bowels. — Marton paper. Captaiu E.Uvin wired yesterday afternoon: — Bad weather approachiag between north-east and east and south ; glass further fall, and heavy rain, and after 12 hours glass rise, and wiud chauge south or west. The Star says that by the performance oE the Feildinsr "Trial by Jury" Compnny at Feilding, the Church of England Bazaar Fund has been augmented by £20 4s 4d. This is moat satisfactory. [Yen indeed. A much more satisfactory financial result than thj»t which attended the same entertainment given m Palmerston. Ed. M.S.!
Dr Monckton will commence practice as a physician m Feilding m the course of a few weeks. In Christchurch on Sunday last a special prayer of thanksgiving was returned at the Cathedral by the Rev Canon Stanford for the recent escape of his Excelloncy the Governor from drowning ! What a pieoe of absurdity ! Messrs Stevens & Gorton will hold a stock sale at Awahuri on Tuesday next. Beferring to the fact that the Wanganui Telephone Exchange has now 80 subscribers, the Telegraph B&ya.Jhjkt Napier, with a much larger population, and a much longer established exchange, must take a backseat. Wauganui, for its population, has probably the largest number of telephone subscribers m the British dominions. Besides this, settlers will not improve their holdings as they would were they freehold, less labor' will be : employed, and the advantages arising trorn the system, if there are any, cannot be compared with those which accrue from the fine old method of selling everyone a plot of ground who is willing to pay for it — either iti cash or by gradual payments. Why not haye 1 Freetrade m land, just as much as m everything else? Where the demand exists the supply will always follow— vide Hawke's Bay itself.
