DIPHTHERIA IN BULLS.

(TO TJHB OF THE STANDARD.) Sir, — T see that diphtheria has made its appearance m Bulls, and that several fatal cases have been reported ■;. recently. Kindly permit me space for a few remarks on this so much feared disease. It is a well-known fact that the different sects of the old school of medicine, which from time to time have been represented by the most eminent physicians, have utterly failed, as shown by practical results of their treatment, to discover proper remedies for the disease, whenf'appearing m a serious form. : The recent proclamation m Paris some time ago amongst other things bears testimony to this fact, and we might- well ask, how is this to be accounted for ? It seems rather strange that while- every i branch of the other sciences makes rapid progress, the medical science should continue m such an unsatisfactory state, as is too evident to any thinking person. There nxist, no doubt, many reasons for this, which to examine would not here be the plade. But m consequence of the many:miserable failures of medical .men, we of course do not wonder that many different sorts of remedies, whici doctors would classify as belonging to the quack species, should have continually been recommended. Experience shows that this last kind of Veineilies have generallycaused more bewilderment and uncertainty amongst the public. If, therefore, sir.it could be conclusively proved that the j system, which the medical men denominate the new school of medicine, I mean the Hahnetnannan system or" tfoiritepathy, has successfully treated J th« disease under consideration even m its worst forms, then surely, we will all admit, that it will be our duty attentively to consider this^Jt is my privr- j lege to be m a positjoß^tatate that such-

rtes'iKntion of the many successful cases which the history of the new systeni m all parts riC tljii world presents, but only make ii few remarks a<* to uly own personal expedience m connection with this subject. Then, sir, I may bs permitted to state, and I am proud of the fact, that I am an ardent disciple of Hahnemann, and that I consider his " Similia Siinilibus cumntur," to be one o£ the grandest discoveries made m medicine, and the truth of which has been singularly manifested m the treatment of diph theria. I have been so peculiarly circumstanced m Australia and also m this colony, that I have been m a certain sense obliged to make the treatment of throat diseases of children a. kind of special study for about 14 years. And I am happy to say that many a time I had the satisfaction to see the ioy of parents when their little ones under my treafc.inent were restored to health and perfectly i cured from diphtheria^ m the worst ; form. in which' the disease often appears m the, colonies. Sir, I know that many who\reatf tni* fetter both ihthif} digfeicfc.and else where.. will testify to the trufli -of what X" state. I could give many *instan, ces / Qf -successful cures, but wi|l forbear/ i If 'it 5 please 1 God, [ intehd to hyrfte an article • on,, subject m Englisli, Danish and -German, and publish it m pamnHTejf f fbrm for the' benefit of the public/The highest medical authorities of the Hahnemannan system will be -quoted, and my own .personal observation and experience of the characteristics of the disease will be noticed. The different medicines and directions for use will be given. I may mention that I shall be especially careful to describe the diagnosis and symptoms, so that intelligent people may be able to understand correctly the nature of the malady, &c. Apologising for taking up your space. — I am, &c, Christopher Gaustac.
