Taonui School Treat.

V [Contributed;] The, children attending the Taonui School, were given a treat last Thursday afternoon by Mrs Astbary, their teacher, assisted by a number of parents and ! friends..-.- -In. the. afternoon after they ! were marched into school, instead of proceeding with the customary work, all the children joined heartily m singing a erace before meat, after . which they were taken to the school sbed, where they did ample justice to many and varied luxuries provided for them. When each and all had thoroughly satisfied their appetites they adjourned to an adjoining paddock and there commenced to further enjoy themselves by running races, scrambling, for lollies, nuts, and apples, and by other various methods 1 ! of youthful pleasure. Messrs Thomas Knight and-W. Brogden were the prime movers m this latter species of enjoyment. When this part of the programme had been concluded the children were assembled m the schoolroom, where they were put through sundry manual exercises and sang several of their school pieces, alter which prizes were presented to the successful pupils by Mr T. Knight as follows :— Emma Harris, dux, Class IV ; Marshall Knight, great progress, Class IV; Mabel Richardson, dux, i Class III; Nelly Donald, best reader, Class III ; May Moffiutt, great progress, Class III; Amy Bropden, neatest exercise book, Class III ; Douglas McDowell, dux m arithmetic, Class II ; Matilda Mitchell, great progress, Class II ; Agnes Walker, punctuality and regular attendance, Class II ; Katarina Mataroa, dux, Class I. Mrs Astbury also gave awards to several others. Mr Knight then addrosued a few words of encouragement and advice to the children, after which they all joined m singing '« God save the Queen," being' then dismissed thoroughly contented and; happy from their .afternoon's relaxation from work. *
