Pahiatua.

This place, which sprang into existence as a settlement some three or four years ago, has made astonishing strides.' *Tii« class of settlers who wet.t there were I men with some small means in their I pockets and energy and pluck in .their breasts. The result was that in a short time they had land cleared and in grass and stocked, and their success attracted others of like mind, who not only knew how to fall trees and grub stumps and plant potatoss, but also were quite aware of the value of crying out loudly of their wants, and had the ability to go the proper way about getting their cries heard in the right quarter, and the persistoncy to refuse to take no whon they req ui red a yes. They quickly got ,■ their own Road Board, so that their rates should be spent just where they would do the most good, and all on their own roads. They have their school, Ttheir hotel, and their stores and the faith that Pahiatua is destined to oust Masterton from the position ot the , future Chicago of the North ! Outsiders do not clearly -see what there is to support this feeling, but there can be no doubt from the quality of the soil and its situation, Pahiatua will be a very prosperous agricultural and fruit-grow-ing, and probably cattle raising settlement, for nowhere does grass grow more luxuriantly at all seasons than thsre.
