Dr Henry Williams, father of Mr H. A. B. Williams, chemist, of Palmers ton, has now commenced practice m Woodville. He has already been appointed medical' officer to all the Friendly Societies m that rising township. The blocks of the Bank of New Zealand building, at .Woody ille, which is built on made ground bars sunk to such an extent that tenders are now invited for raising it.
The up-river Maoris at Wanganni have au immense crop of quinces this year, and the price m consequence is very low.
A drillshed is about to be erected m Woodville.

A correspondent informs the Woodville Examiner that the Rev Mr Rbbertshavr has dropped into a very considerable fortune. He still, however, intends to carry on his ministrations m connection with the Church of England m. this district.
The Borough appears to have mads, a very bad bargain of the horse they purchased trora Mr Sly. They might ;have been on their guard when the vendor distinctly refused to give a guarantee with the animal of any kind. ' One guarantee he might have given with perfect safety, viz, that the brute was the most accomplished and successful fencedestroyer of any animal of his species m the North Island. He is a regular terror at this game. The fence surronuding the gravel reserve where he runs at night, has" been smashed throughout, scarcely a panel being left standing. The race meeting at the Hutt on Friday and Saturday, although it will probably be referred to always as a " teetotal meeting" can scarcely be legitimately so called. No strong liquors were sold to be sure ; but the quantity of liquor consumed was quite equal to that dispensed at former meetings. ware abundant, and their contents distributed broadcast.
[ A man named Johan T. Thorraalion, about 23 years of age, was found dead m a waterhole on Messrs Riddiford's run at Te Awaite .on the sth instant. H« had been engaged m musteringsheep, and it is supposed he rode up to the hole without seeing it and the horse stopping suddenly, on discovering it and threw the rider, who wab probably stunned by his fall. At the inquest a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.
White Island is reported to be m an unusually active state, and columns of steam and smoke can be seen ascending from a long distance off.
In connection with the Taiaroa disaster, and the many mishaps of late years to steamers on the coasts of this and the neighboring colonies, arises the reflection that, when the said coasts were hardly lit, or properly surveyed, few mishaps occurred, and that" the old school of shipmasters rawly or ever got their vessels ashore. — Herald.
The public are again reminded that the Palmeraton Touug Men's Mutual Improvement Society will open thoir session for the present year by a social gathering; m the Wesleyan Hall this evening at 7.20. It will be found iv our advertising columus. The cese of Gillett Bros. v. Thomas Dwan, aud Co., was to be heard at the Wellington Supreme Court on Saturday. The plaintiffs, who are wine murchants at Bordeaux, claim £150 for goods sold on their behalf by defendants, the wellknown auctioneers, who claim to have a set-off of £97, and the balance has been paid into Court. The travelling expenses of the Hawera members of the Hospital Board are to be defrayed by the Board. A general meeting of members of the Palmerston Caledonian Society will be held m the Council Chambers to-morrow evening at 8 o'clock. The Feilding Star, m speaking of the concert there on Friday evening, thus refers to our local Rotuenyi :— Mr Cohen followed with a violin, solo '• Air Varie" (do Beriot),and took the house by storm. His masterly execution was very effective. Lower down m the programme he also played " Le Reve," whielr as m the f ortner case was excellently rendered.
