THE LATE LORD SHAFTESBURY.
By cable a day or two ago we received the brief tragic item that Lord Shaftesbiiry had committed suicide m a cab m Regent-street, London. No Darticulars whatever were given, and there seems to be considerable diversity of opinion as to the age of the deceased. The Post affirms that the young Earl was only 17 years of age, having succeeded to tho title a few months ago, on the decease of his father, the celebrated philanthropist. The Napier Telegraph states that the late Lord was born 1831, and was the oldest son of the celebrated philanthropist who died last year. It also remarks that the deceased peer was a man of no mark m either . political or social circles, and was always regarded as being weak-brained. His brother was a different at amp of man altogether, having taken an active part m politics, and held office under Lord Palmerston, and Mr Gladstone. The late Lord Shaftesbary was married, and leaves a j son to succeed him, who was born m 1869. The Evening Press maintains that the suicide was "a very worthy man of 55," who took atter his father a good deal m habits and disposition, but who like the rest of his family, was more or less subject to religious mania. The successor to the title will be Lord Ashley, a youth of ,17. We think this is more likely to be the correct description of the unfortunate Lord.
