The Palmerston Musical and Dramatic Society will give their seventh entertainment m Feilding on Easter Monday. A very popular programme is now under rehearsal. A public tea will be held m the Feeding. Wesleyan Church next Thursday, when addresses may be expected from the Revs Murray, Piffin, Clarke, Caunell, Bunn, and others. The case Richter, & Co. v. Perkins, comes on for hearing at the Wanganui Supreme Court to-day. Several witnesses left by this morning's train. It is expected the case will not conclude today. The frequent bursting of the Wellington water mains are a source of great annoyance to the residents, and are being complained ol : m the local newspapers. Often serious damage to perishable goods is narrowly averted. The Opera Coraique " Trial by Jury" was given m the Feilding Town Hr.ll last evening by the local Musical Society m aid of tho English Church. The entertainment was a competent success m every way and will mean a substantial amount to be handed over to the church as there was estimated to be not less than £40 m the house. The Palmbrslon Young Men's Mutual Improvement Society will open this session for the present session for the present year by a social gathering to be held m the Wesleyan Hall, on Monday evening next at 7.30. The programme will consist of songs, duets, glees, and recitations. Short addresses will also be delivered by the President of the society and the Mayor. An intermission of half- an-hour will take place for refreshments,, including tea and coffee. Admission is fixed at the low charge .of one shilling, which fact together with the very interesting programme should induce a very large attendance. An interesting aud pleasant gathering is likely to take place. At the Feildiug entertainment, last night the item song " Ssrenade " by Miss | Atkins, with violin accompaniment by Mr Cohen was simply magnificent— a treat of no ordinary kind to those who can appreciate high-class music. It was worth the journey to Feilding and. back and the price of admission to enjo3* this item alone. It was received with a tumultuous encore. Messrs Nolan Tonka and Co.'s Manaia sale will take place on Thursday at 1 p.m. The catalogue appears elsewhere. At the Supreme Court yesterday Pariri Raprauhemo charged with breaking and entering at Otaki, and Richard O'Donneli charged with larceny of a watch at Otaki, were found not guilty. A special railway time table is advertised for the E&ster holidays. The temperature to day was exceptionally mild after the recent rather bleak weather. Sou'wester has been scratched for all engagements at the Auckland autumn meeting. A conference is to take place m Sydney on 26th instant to consider Colonial defence and New Guinea matters. Admiral Tryon is now m Melbourne m connection with Colonial defence matters. The Victorian Minister of Mines has resigned, and the vacancy is not to be filled np. It has now been proved that the disease which broke out on board the steamer Dorunda was actually cholera. Wanganui has vow 73 subscribers to the telephone exchange, or only four leas than Napier. Well done Wanganui. The inquiry into the Taiaroa ii taking place this afternoon m Wellington. Till the hour of going to press nothing [ special had been elicited. At Christchurch Supreme Coart a libel ease, James Pettengell against Selig and Bird, proprietors of the N. Z. Referee, was heard. Pettengell is a- boxer, aud the libel he alleges to is contained m an article pnbliehed m the Referee, to the effect that m a boxing match between Dium and Pettengell, it had been arranged that the loser wae to have 25 per cent of th*> takings, and the expenses to be shared by both, but that Pettengell suddenly disappeared with all the takings, leaving Dunn, who lost the match, to pay the expenses. A remark that such conduct brought boxing into disrepute, was contended to mean that Pettengell was disreputable. The defence was that the words did not bear the meaning imputed to them, and that they were here, m substance and fact. No witnesses were called for the defence. The jury returned a verdict for the defendant that there was no libel, and judgement was given accordingly, with costs on the lowest scale.
