The Defaulting Bank Manager.
Whatever, motive (says the Sydney Evening News) gentlemen holding positions of anthority may have had m attempting to shelter Mr Holt under the wing of sympathy, the staggering fact has to be faced that his impecuniosity is of a far-reaching character. Upon a substratum of fact ingenious people have built up a fabric of wild statements as to Mr Holt's position and actions. Rumour has said that Mr Holt's habiliI ties amounted to £300,000 or more ; people who pretend to know allege that about a tithe of that sum is a nearer ap proach to tangibility. It is true that one gentleman occupying a prominent position m the racing and speculating world has intimated that he has a claim of £12,000 against,. Mr Holt; but the question as to whether his claim does not come under the head of transactions m joint partnerships is a thing which will, m all probability have to be decided by a legal tribunal. The Bank of New Zealand will have to meet considerable claims, for which they become responsible through the action of Mr Holt as manager, but many olairas will be resisted. ■
