The Tariff Committee of the United States Congress recommend that wool should be allowed to be imported into the States free of duty. The Earls of Cork and Kenmare have [ resigned the positions held by them m the Ministry. General Ignatieff is «f opinion that war between Russia and Austria is not improbable. It ia reported that Signor Depretis, President of the Italian Council, has resigned. Matterson refuses to make any concessions m the sculling matches. The Australian mails ex Orient Company's R..M.S. John Elder, which left Melbourne March sth, were delivered here to-day via Naples. France, England, and Germany are prepared to settle the difficulties regard ing the occupation of the Pacific. Islands, but the negotiations are blocked, by the opposition offered by the Federal Council and Sir Alex Stuart.

London, April 13. In the House of Commons today, the debate.' on the Irish question was continued, and the first reading of the Bill was carried without a division. Mr Gladstone, speaking on the^ measure, stated that the Government did not regard the provisions relating to the Imperial control of the customs and the exclusion of Irishmen from the Imperial Parliament as vital points m the scheme.
