Caledonian Society.

The meeting convened for Monday evening to consider the advisability of es tahliihing a Caledonian Society for Pairaerston was very thinly attended, the following only being present — The Mayor, Messrs Lmton, Walkley, Cowper, Flood, F. Mowlem, Collinson, Leggirtwood, W. F«nton,junr. The Mayor who was voted to the chair read the advertisement calling the meeting and asked those present to express .their views. He supposed the only business they couwld do that evening would be to decide upon establishing tho society and ! appoint a Provisional Committee to draw up suggestions, etc, to be submitted at a meeting to be held later on. Mr Linton suggested, oh account of the smailncss of the meeting, its pnstponement. He did not know who convened the meeting ; at «ny rate they were not there. He thought they 'should have a full meeting before committing themselves to any line of action. Mr Walkley thought it would be better to go on, and at least appoint a Provisional Committe. He noticed Mr Cowper had just arrived and would ask him to give them some information on the matter. Mr Cowper said the idea of forming a Caledonian Society had baen mooted ever since the sports held m Otaki on the 17th ot March. People had been asking if they were going to have any here. The question had seemed to meet with general support everywhere. He would propose that a Caledonian Society bo formed, to be called the Pahnerston Caledonian Society. Seconded by Mr W. Fen ton, and carried;' ; It was also moved and carried that those present at that meeting be constitute ed i Provisional Committee to take the preliminary steps required, and report progress on Tuesday week. Mr Cowper stated that Mr Lee had promised to act as secretary if elected but was unavoidably absent that evening. The question of subscription was then discussed and it was ultimately resolved that the same should be 5/- to admit lady and gentleman. This to be subjf ct to thft resolution of the meeting to be held next week. No further business was transacted and the, meeting adjourned
