NEW SOUTH WALES AS A MODEL FOR NEW ZEALAND.
. According to Sir Julius Yogel (writes • the New Zealand Herald), New South Wales is a colony which New Zealand ought to imitate. In his Auckland speech he dwelt upon its borrowing policy m term? of undisguised admiration. He was enamoured of its public works prodigality, which has caused, he peemed to think, the colony to advance by leaps and bounds. We had only to follow suit, he suggested, to experience a similar now of proapurity, but the Budget introduced by Sir Patrick Jentiingsit) the Legislative Assembly last night tells a different tale, and complet. '< \y demolishes the Vogelian romance. Its lavish borrowing, and spirited public works policy, have landed tho colony m a deficiency of £1,703,000 In order to meet this serious deficit, fresh taxation is imperative. The proposals of the Government are certain to evoke considerable opposition, though m the circumstances it is difficult to see what other course they could have adopted to extricate the colony from its. present! financial plight. They propose to in-, crease the Customs tariff on barley and butter and other articles, to double the duty on hops, to impose a laud tax of one halfpenny m the pound, and- an income tax of fnurpencb m the ponnd on nil income over £300 per annum. This is the natural outcome of the policy which finds so much favour m the eyes of Sir Julius Yogel, and which he is so anxious to commit this colony to. Altogether the Budget is an interesting and instructive commentary on that portion of his Auckland sponch m which ha lauded the policy of New South Wales, and recommended iti adoption by New Zealand.
