At Wellington race meetings a box to receive contributions to the hospital is now placed m a conspicuous position on the course. People who live m glass houses, especially m journalistic fflass houses, should not indulge m the dangerous practico of-stuue-throwing. Dnring the hearing, of a case at the Wellington Resident-Magistrate's Court Mr W. McLean, secretary of the Wellington Loan Company, stated that tho rate of interest on a cheque which had been discounted for a firm, which had afterwards to seek the protection of'' the Bankruptcy Court, was 40 per cent per annum. ''No wonder your directors get sleek and fat," remarked a spectator to the secretary. "But we fail to get principal as well as interest sometimes," was the' reply.
