Supreme Court Sittings.
(UNITED PJIEBS ASSOCIATION ) Auckland, Tuesday. The Supreme Court criminal sessions opened today. In his charge to the Grand Jury, the Judge said there were twenty-seven charges against twenty* lix prisoners, including eight Maoris. None of the charges were of a grave nature. • Chbistchurch, Tuesday. Th.a criminal sittings opened to-day. Justice Johnston, m charging the Grand Jury, said— -I cannot soe that there is any indication of the growth or|doveloptnent of any particular crime or cliss of. crime, or any condition of things that should lead to anxiety aa to the state of the Colony, nor does it seem that tho depression, of which we have heard so ronch,' has at all effected the working claßSea m the way of producing, any addition of criminals throughout . the country. In reference to. the Howard case, be pointed out that m law a marriage celebrated by the captain of a ship at sea was no marnage,vso that the charge of conspiracy might be sustained even if the only conspirators were Howard' and "Mrs Howard." : Wan Ling, a Chinaman, for breaking into the ' dwelliug-house of a fellow countryman and {stealing £25, was sentenced *to i twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor. Henry Lumb, a boy of fifteen, was convicted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor, and two whippings, each of 25 Btrokea with a rod to be" administered at the commencement and close of bis sentence. John Brook, lan old man, was sentenced to twelve months' hard labor on two charges of larceny as a bailee of saddles and bridles, the sentences to run concurrently. The Grand Jury, found true bills m all the cases on the calendar.
