In Cuba-street there was a considerable body ot water, but the new cuiveit under the Burke-street crossing enabled it all to get away freely. The Forcinanof Works exercises a wise discretion m making culverts equal to what is required of them, the reverso of which has been the mistake hitherto m many cases. On inquiry we learn that Mr Gardes' accident tin's forenoon might easily have been more aerious than fortunately was the case. It appears that Mr Gardes and his son were driving up Main-street, from tho direction of the school-house, on the same side as Mr Warbnrton's house, when a hole about 2 feet deep was noticed just m front of the . horee. An effort was made to pull him clear, but his hind legs got m, and he then f«-ll on his knees injuring them considerably. The place appeared to be where a culvort had once been, and the ground, had fallen m, probably after last night*; rain, leaving a very dangerous hole. Mr Giijde's arid his son escaped- injury, but. it is a wonder they" did. . No fault catr attach to the Foreman of WorksJ as it must be impossible for him to ascertain the whereabouts of every dangerous place caused by a subsidence of the streot after a heavy rainfall. At the Wanganui Police Court yester day, a boy named f'rcderiok Kite was charged by Walter Churtou with larceny of fruit, valued at Is. The lail acknowledged having taken the fruit, but said he was hungry, or he would not have 'stolen them. It was ordered thai the boy should receive four strokes with a bitch rod, to be administered m the presence otth a pbiice '
