Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. MONDAY, APRIL 5, 1886. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Among the special entries for Messrs Freeman R. Jackson & Co's Saturday's sale, at St. Hill Street, Wanganui, are 12 unbroken draught and other noises. Additions are made to the catalogues of Mr A. Barns' Campbelltown (Wanffatiufj »»l«i to-morrow, and Mf ssrs F. R. Jacksou & C 0.,8 Waverley sale on Fri. day. To make room for special items of interest received by the Frisco Mail, the leader and various other matter ig held over. With reference to the results of the School Examinations given on Friday, it is only fair to state that some of them were for ihe examinations of 1884, the Inspector not having time to examine them before the holidays. In some instances this has led to injustice to teachers who have secured creditable passes since the beginning of the year. Herald. A Melbourne telegram to, a Sydney paper on March 17th is as follows : — " Mrs McMshon, gatekeeper or. the railway near Dandenong, wlrile holding a flag for the afternoon goods tiain, noticed her infant child toddling across the rails towards her. She rushed to save it, but was caught by the engine buffer and severely iujured. The child was unhurt." „ A Wanganni paper hears there is likely to be a lawsuit owing to an over zealous insurance canvasser having it is asserted made damaging statements as to the stability of a company doing a large busineus m the colony. The rival canvasrers are very bitter m their sweeping assertions when on the war path ; a heavy dose of damages will cool their ardour if they are not careful. A v«ry critical and important surgical operation was performed at the Wanganui Hospital on the 30th ultimo on a young girl of 10 years of age, who had a large abdominal tumor removed. Drs Earle, Tripe, and Connolly were present, and the whole operation was got through with despatch and success, as the little patient is making a splendid recovery so far. The turn r itself was of a large size, weighing some 161bs, and necessitating a very large incißJion to allow of its removal.— Herald. The editors of p^oular magazines are constantly m recei&: of curious letters. Here is one of them sent to the editor of Harper's the other Hay. It was from a lady, who wrote that! she was dying, and that her physiciaVs told her she would be dead before thY conclusion of Mr Howells's story " Inflian Summer," then running m the Monthly. She was very much interested m ?t, and did not want to die until she knew how it . was going to end, and she. begged the editor to let her read the advance sheets that she might die happy. \ "Dealing with an application^ made by Mr Jellico at the sitting of the Wellington Bankruptcy Court on Thursday for Bolici'tor's costs m an estate, His- Honor Judge Richmond said he thought the lawyer was a sort of Duifer at a credittors' meeting betwoen the debtor \ and the creditors, barring the questions of the latter. He thought it would be Uketter for debtor and creditors to be face^tp face. Mr Jellico said th<t lawyers haa! very little voice at a creditors' 'meeting 11 and suggested that if his Honor made the order he ..suggested (two guineas) lawyers would have to seek the protection of the Bankruptcy Court. His Honor said he must keep the costs down m bankruptcies, the Government took so much for stamps . Eventually the mat - ter was settled by an order being made for two guineas costs, ie addlftoiTT^ COjtMontof pookft.

A Wairarapa paper Bays : — " The difficulty of obtaining reliable information m some of the bush settlements was exemplified m a touching manner by our special reporter a few days ago. Wishing to learn something about the school, our special made up to a buxom lady living adjacent, and m answer to his query, " Is the schoolmaster English or Scandinavian ■?' she replied ' Scotch !' 1 Does he teach tho children English or Scandinavian ?' was the next question. 'Irish,' came thn reply. , Our special did not press for further information on this subject, as the idea of a Scotchman | 1 m a Scandinavian settlement teaching Irish was too much for 'his sense of '; humour, so he closed his note-book and subsided." The manner m which some census papers are sometimes filled m is, to say the: least, a source of much trouble to the sub-enumerator, whose duty it is to see that thoy are correctly sent m. We have heard of one paper m which two persons enter their sex a« " not kuown ;" and iv the colum having reference to farming implements against " thrashing machine," the words "my wife" is I entered. This may be very smart, but I may be very dangerous to the witty writer. — Berald. An incident occurred this morning (says Thursday's Napier Telegraph) both amusing and instructive; and which re j fleets but little credit on those that are supposed to see the municipal by-laws respected. It appears that a goat, who after fruitless search m the streets of the town for a member of the polico force, walked into the Corporation offices this morning at eleven o'clock, and looking- into I;be Town Clerk's office, let'out a most pitiful yell, which, needless to say, much effected that geuial officer. It then left/ and was afterwards seen m Hernchell-street m close intercourse with a local J.P.
