We learn by the last English Mail that Mr F. do J. Clere, of the firm of Atkins & Clere, Architects, was elected a Follow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. There are three other Fellows of the R.1.8.A., resident m New Zealand — Invercargill, Auckland, and Wellington each possessing one. At the Lyceum on Sunday evening, we aro informed that an able lecturer will occupy the fornin. The subject will be found advertised m another column, it is also hoped that a iarge number will take the opportunity to hear the lecture. ,-.■.., v .,•.,„,. Mr J. H. Hanlrins made an applicatiou to the Property Tax Board of Reviewers yesterday, ou behalf ..of Mr J. E. Nathan of Wellington, that only tbe evidence of the' assessors' be taken m Feilding re property assessment of Kiwitea and Feildiug, and that the decision of the reviewers might be withheld and deiivsred at the Foxton sitting where Mr Nathan will be represented by counsel. Mr Hankins further stated that the Property Tax Department had I consented to dni procedure subject to tbe consent of the reviewers. The latter refused to grant the application. They had received a wire from tbe Property Tax Department but considered it .would be better to heat counsel m Feilding. Mr W. <3t. Robinson, of Foxton, has a King Pippin m his garden from which he has gathered 4 apples weighing m the aggregate 51bsl£oz. These do not come up to the three left by Mr T. A gentleman recently from Sydney informs us that Holt, the defaulting bank manager, is now, be believes, on his way to Valparaiso. Wellington applications for redactions m the valuation of their properties under the Property Tax Assessment Act have apparently taken warning by the incident which took place m an Assessment Court at Auckland recently, when aa owner's statement that his land was only worth a certain amount was at once, closed with. Mr J. M. Cleland was objecting to the valuation of a certain property of his at £570. After a short discussion as to the value of the property, Mr Pearce, the Chairman of the Board of Reviewers, asked Mr Cleland whether lie would sell for £570. " Well," Mr Cleland replied, " I don't know that I should." "That finishes the question," said Mr Pearce, "the objection is disallowed. — Wellington paper. It wait stated during the sitting of the Wellington Assesment Court that land m Molesworth-street had gone down m value nearly one-half— that the price of land m that locality had fallen off more than m any part of the city. On tho other hands, Mr Ames, the valuer, said that more property had changed hands lately than duriug the last two or three years. A member of the legal profession suggested that probably this was caused by an anxiety to get rid of the property. There are pome curious exhibits from time to time at the Resident Magistrates Court, says a Wellington paper. On Tuesday two casks of beer were rolled iv by Constable Grleeson, the Court orderly, during the hearing of some charges against Andrew Hamilton and William Strike, of the" Mitchell-town Brewery, for alleged breaches of the Beer Duty Act, 18*} Q. At the 1 rising of the Court Inspector Brown asked what he phould do with the two casks, and his Worship ordered that they should, under the circumstanoes, be banded back to the brewers.
