Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 1886. THE UNEMPLOYED IN THE SOUTH.
A correspondent ef the Otago Daily Timea signing himself "Indignant Citizen," writes the following concerning some of the men employed iii Dunedin on relief work :— I had occasion to spend thn greater part of this afternoon at a place overlooking Crawfoid-street, where nine of the unom cloyed were endeavoring U pass the time. I never saw a more pitiable, disgusting exhibition than that presented by these nine able-bodied men loafing with pick* m their hands. The sooner the Mayor again takes the active supervision ot the unemployed the better for the public and the men themselves. I protest against the wages paid to these men. They are dear at a»y pries— they are worse, they are an evil example and an eyesore to honeßt hard-working men toiling early and late for a scanty living. Whilst L was watching these idlers there appeared to bo an alarm that one of their nurses, m the shape of a city councillor, was approaching, when suddenly every man exhibited extraordinary energy. One minute 1 sufficed to show it was a false alarm, and once more exhausted nature sought repose, and one of their number was despatched for a can of beer to the nearest pub.
