' (UNITED PEESB ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, Friday. Captain Corbett, J.P., who had sentenced a man named Mulvaney to a lengthy tenij of imprisonment for attempting to set fire to Kirkwood's Hotel, Cambridge, was last night knocked down by Mulvaiiey who was subsequently arrested, and got six months. Christchukch, Friday. A than named- John Jones committed suicide.on board the Aorangi between 8 and 9 o'clock this morning. The de eeasod went" to England a' short time since, and came out m the steamer lost voyage, working his passage as carpenter's mate.; He. is kuowii at Littleton, and has two or three children m the Burnham school. It appears that ho hhd been absent from his ship for about a week and returned yesterday apparently suffering from the eftects of a spree and m low spirits. He was found m the storeroom m the iorw&id gart of the steamer by a" lamp trimmer, suspendsd down tho small hatch leading to the lower deck. The man was quite dead;
