Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on The West Coast. TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 1886. CONTEMPORARY OPINION.
With several other newspapers which have reviewed Mr Mac Arthur's recent post-sessional address to his constituents, the Hawera Star is very pronounced m its approval of the sound sonse and practical sentiments, by ..which that 'speech was characterised. In .fact, all our contemporaries, so. fer ;as we have noticed^ that have made reference to our member's speech, have alluded to m terms of praise and satisfaction. The Star commences its article m the following words: — «*.lf we were asked to select the most straightforward sensible speech of the recess, we should ,be.|nc|ined to name My fl|A'cAft*TH%i'si There is iio|hing| viryibril|lianti yery*little that is s&fkin§ty4iew or decidedly original about it ; but we believe it fnaore, truly represents the menta] of ,the ,ayerage colonist who takes an iriterest'in the ipolitics of the day, than any other speech which has come under o'lir notice." It then deals seriatim with the more salient points m the speech, and thus concludes : — " We venture to think that 'if.we had a lew. more fearless out&ppken politicians, of Mr MApAR/fHuitV classy m the House, political jobbery would be more often talked of • than carried out. Whereas, acqording to i trustworthy well-informed sources, it is averred that political bribes were never so frequent nor political jobbery so rife, as during the last session of 'the. New Zealand Parliament." It ig yery plea^t fo note that our representative's address to his constituents is "so favourably commented on by journals at a distance/ as such is satisfactory testimony that we have something more than a representative m name only, but a man who has opinions of his o^n, and can give expression to them m a manner that carries conviction, and that favourably imBF e .§?f§ R ub !>c journals at a distance, who hold up the speaker as & model worthy of imitation/ ' ' ••■'". ■.
