Rifle Match.

■'- On Saturday atternoon twenty men comprising the teams of the Woodville and Palmerston Rifles proceeded to the Rifle Range to fire a friendly match. On the men a rr iving at the firing point, they discovered that the markers, butts, and dummy target had been taken down and thrown into the river, and a number of willows planted, m front of the target ; these the Volunteers pulled up and threw, into the riyer. The men then set. to work to erect a temporary marking place, when Mr Batchelar, the owner of tlie adjoining prooerty, arrived on the scene". This "gentleman proceeded to interfere witli the further progress of the work by placing himself m front of the target and defying the men to go on with the match. The officers endeavored to argue the matter with Mr Batchelar, hut the latter refused to listen to anything they had to say, and simply stated that he would not allow them to fire a single shot. Thts being the caso the men had to return to town without doing anything whatever. The Woodville team lunched at Captnin Carroll's and returued home about 4.30.
