Fire Brigade.

The members of our local Fire Brigade had a lively time of it last evenitpf. The advertisement calling the practice had set forth that a i'alse alarm would be made between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Accordingly the members waited about till close on the latter hour expecting the toll of the bell. This, however, not coming 1 off: it was deemed advisable by ..some one to agitate the gong without further waiting, and forthwith the warning peal sounded. The men immediately flew to their posts, arid' in a very short time got their equipments and the necessary appliances out, and were proceeding round the square without a ; Captain when they were met by Lieutenant Tingey who took command, and after waiting for some time for the Captain, the former, considering it advisable to get on with some practice,- issued souae .instructions to the men , to unhook the ladders, &c. Just at this moment Captain^West put m an appearance, and appeared to be'TOrto 1 verfr jpleasdnit humor either, for he immediatdly attacked Lieutenant Ting'ey m a most nnwarrantad and we think ungentlemanly manner for having taken command of the men. However, Captain West reckoned with-, his host this time, as the majority of the men there and then pressed . Lieutenant Tingey to join wiih (hem m resigning m a body. Lieuteaant Tingey, however, acted m a different spirit and although requested by Captain West, who had by this time cooled off, to take command refused .to do other than act as his position entitled him to. Captain West subsequently apologised, we are glad to state, to Lieutenant Tingey for his brusque demeanour and hasty language towards him. The men then proceeded up Ean-gitikei-street to the old brewery where they went through a short :practice.. rK: -
