THE MONISY MARKET.
The cheapening and the lowering of rates of interest is going on in spite of all efforts to the contrary, says one i of our, contemporaries. Owing to the decrease in the value of land in Great. Britain and Ireland, the leading lite assurance offices are finding their investments more insecure than they care about; and they are turning their attention to Australia as a better field. One of ' the oldest and one of the best managed offices, the Scottish Widows, Fund, which has assets ot the value of eight million, has resolved to appoint a special agent to reside iu r Melbourne for the purposed making investments in this hemisphere. Other societies are bound* to follo.w the' lead, ; and .out of ;the! 150 millions' at ■ th« disposal '--6"f --those; companies the rising communities in Australia, including this colony, are certain to receive an abundantsupply of loan capital. The new competitors will, by their operations, affect the rate ot interest considerably, and we may look- upon, the days 'of ten and > eight per cent, as" now numbered. The HomV companies used to invest largely in municip'al securitiesy but '■ British muni • cipalities fiud thoy can borrow more cheaply in the open, market, and have given up the insurance companies.
