Auckland, Saturday The Mongonui School Committee have substituted swimming for drill in sum mer. Arrived— Ship Lady Jocelyn, Captain Watt, from London, after a passage of 99 days from the docks. She brings 18 saloon, 38 second classs, and several steerage passengers. There have been land slips on the railway line between Pakeno and Whanrata, and a large fall of earth had to be cleared away before the traffic was resumed. Christchurch, Sunday. The amount collected for the Catholic Magdalen Asylum, including contributions laid on the foundation stone, is over £1000. New Plymouth, Saturday. About one thousand natives from the 'West Coast passed through the town this morning. They go as far as Waitara and then return. A meeting was held last night, and presided over by the Mayor, when resolutions were passed asking Mr Samuel, the member for the town, to urge on the Government the necessity to continue the snagging of the Mokau river and clearing it to the furtherest navigable point ; also the desirability of throwing open the Mokau district settlement at the earliest possible date. A native named Wahieroa was arrested this morning at Titokowaru's place, Mawhitiwhiti. He is charged with maiming cattle hear Hawera. He will be brought into the New Plymouth Gaol.
