Ferguson Esq., and Captain •". ~Mowlem, J's.P.] ; One defendant was fined m the usual amount and costs for allowing his chimney to be on lire. - i - Two lads named Wiggins were dharged with damaging a well m one of .the Standard paddocks, by wrenching off and throwing the lid down. The. accused denied having committed the damage. The evidence of Alexander McMinn and his son was taken, and also of the constable. The Bench said they were quite satisfied the lads had been m the paddock and. had done the damage with which they were charged. They were cautioned against similar conduct m future, and were fined 2s, damage ss, and costs 9s, or m default 48 hours m Wangaiui gaol. The prosecutor offered to pavthe fine, as hisobject was to show the accused lads and others that wanton mischief of the kind would be severely punished, but the Bench said that was a matter m which they could not interfere. ' ' ; A man named Joseph McNally, on a charge of using obscene language, pleaded guilty , and wiis sentenced to one month's ; hard labor ; and for resisting"thft police two months', bard labour.
