A young medical m.an named Christie committed suicide .on the 34th (lit. m Melbourne at the Coffee Palace, Collinsstreet, hy moans of chloroform. De ceased, -.who arrived recently m the colony as doctor of a sailing vessel, boarded at the Coffee Palace, and had been drinking heavily. On the morning j of the 24th lie was found dead m bed fully dressed, having a vial half full of chloroform m one hand and a towel saturated with the poison applied to his nostrils. . Although several sheep districts hare 'not 'vet been officially declared clean, we £Post) have authority for stating that at the present moment the whole of the colony is free from scab, with the exception otf- a small area m the Kaikoara district, and there is every reason to believe that this will be cleaned within the next three months, as most vigorous efforts are being made. The complete eradiction of scab m New Zealand will be an event, of great importance, and wilk reflect >»<eafc credit an. the Colonial Secretary and the officers of his department. Their efforts durinsr the last year have been most energetic and unceasing 1 . The Thames Advertiser says :- " It is currently reported that an important gold find has been made somewhere m the vicinity of Waipu, near Whangapei, by Sirason and party. Efa particulars of the discovery ar§ yet obtainable, but we learn that the lucky prospectors are sanguine that they have met with a genuine auriferous lode. , The Wellington Tress makes the fol lowing comments upon the '• personal " style of journalism adopted by certain newspapers :-=',* •£!« Wanganui Herald is constantly, pegging away at this paper about something or other, but as it generally adopts the wretched practice of assailing one of the proprietors personally, instead of dealing with the subject m question from the public point of of view, we never take any notice of its attacks. Life is not < long enough to waste time upon mild -slinging like that. We are always, ready for a fair and square discussion, but we must decline to enter a squabble about private persons who happen "to .be connected with this or any other paper. The Wanganui Hsrald should take this hint, and drop the Pott and Slurk style of journalism. The public don't like it, and it is a nuisance every way," " The New ZSealand Colonial and Consignment Company, to whioh (says the London Correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald) I have referred on more than one occasion, has published its prospectus this week. It sets forth that the company have established agencies m between 60 -and 70 of the principal towns and cities m the kingdom, which, they say, will relieve tha congestion of the London market— ft condition at things whioh. " frequently tends to keep down the price of frozen mutton— and will bring tne consumer and the shipper into more direct communication. The company will act as commission agents only, and not as direct importers. A portion of their profits, they say, will be set aside to form a bonus, to he annually distributed amongst those shippers who have had the most dealings with them. I have freqiientlyreinarked that if agencies for the sale of Australian frozen mutton could be established m different parts of the country, the trade, would be materially benefited, and there is no doubt that the aew Company will prove the truth of this foreoast. As sin evidence of how closely the River Plate frozen mutton trade is running that of Australasia, I may mention th it the number of sheep on the River Plate is -now estimated by competent authorities, at upward of 80,0.00,0.00, and, H is. s^g \p be. on , tye inore.a.se."
