Jackson &Co. announce their fortnightly sale, which will be held at the St-Hill street sale yards, Wanganui, on Wednesday next, when they will offer for sale, m addition to the rams already advertised, between four and five thousand sheep consisting of superior breeding ewes, forward wethers, lambs m wool, and lambs shorn. An advertiser requires a lad with some experience m the printing trade. Application to be made m first instance to Standard office. Mr John Martin of Huangarua Station near Martinborough, appeared m the Wellington Police Oourtas prosecutor and defendant. He laid an information against himself for failing to register the birth of his child, born on the first of March, 1885, and was fined m the minimum penalty of Is,/ and 7s costs. It seems that Mr Martin came down from Huangarua to register the birth of the child, but was advised that he could only do so by laying an information against himself for a breach of the law. He accordingly went before Mr C. 0. Graham, J. P., and svvpro an information. Cases of this kind are ot rare occurrence. An interesting relic of the famous Sir Walter Raleigh was sold the oth«r day by a well-known firm of auctioneers. It consisted of Sir Walter's original tobacco pipe, which is said on a certain memorable occasion to have so excited the disgust of Queen Elizabeth. < We reprint a unique advertisement ' which appears m the Taranaki News,' : ?' The following is inserted to let the people of the Taranaki district know that the person who is responsible for the leaders m the Herald is not satisfied after using the said paper for a number of years m opposing me, publishing anything that would tend to hold me up to ridicule, or tend to lower me m the eyes of the people of Taranaki, but has adopted a aew tack, giving me open abuse m the public Street. Should the said person try it on again, I will appeal to the law tor protection, If the Ihw does not protect me, I, m self-do-fence, will protect myself ; so I hope he will take this hint.— E. M.
