The first charge heard m Wellington under the section of the Police Offences Act which prohibits selling on Sunday was; heard by ■Mr H, : S. Wardell,^R.M. A Chinaman was charged with hiving oii Sunday, the 24th January, gold two bottles of ginger beer, the sale " not being a work of necessity or charity." '* Not a work of charity," said Mr Wardell, innocently ; "It was a hat day, wasn't it?" Tho hearing of the case was proceeded with, a constable, being called to prove the sale. Presently a gentleman iq Court remarked that the accused, who was smiling on the Court ■; from the dock at the end of the chamber did not understand what was being jjaid. His Worship said it would be necessary then, to obtain an interpreter, adding, sarcastically, that the case was an im portant one. Inspector Browne, who was conducting the' prosecution, did not care about incurring the expense, and. the' charge was withdrawn.—Wellington paper. . Cardinal Moran is expected to arrive at the, Bluff on the Btli prox , and will bo met there by Bishop Moran, who will accompany him to Lake Wakatipu. A reception .will be given by the .Catholic people to the Cardinal on his arrival m Dunedin. Cardinal Moran will preach the; dedication sermon at the opening of the 1 cathedral on Sunday, the 14th, and Bishop Redwood, of Wellington, will preach tho sermon m the evening. The choir will consist 'of sixty voices. The Manapouri has brought from Melbourne and Hobart a number of merino pedigree sheep tor shipment per Doric, to the Argentine Republic. A number of Bordor Leicester will be taken from Port Chalmers for the same destination. ; The Wellington Vresa, In an aooount of a strange character named Newton, who recently attempted suicide, says : — Once, having, reason to suspect a neighbouring cockatoo of stealing his wool, lie set a watch and caught the culprit m the* act. He seized him, bound him hand and foot, set him down on his knees before the Ore m his kitchen, placed a man with a loaded gun at full cock, oovering him at short range and then read the bible aloud to him all night. In due course he handed him over to justice, but on his discharge from gaol he took him into his own service, so that he should not be driven to crime for a living.
