A New Fire Extinguisher.
A large niirijber of people including business- men and others, assembled: m the Government paddock, Cambridge, on a rebei.t morning, to witness a: trial ot tne "Climax" fire oxtiugnisher. This is one., of T ihe latest . ideas Jn >tho way of fire extinguishing mediums, and judging by the success of Saturday's experiment is perhaps the most successful, rim patent consists or two small cylinders joiued > toguther, aud holding an. equal amount of water. To «ach cylinder is : attached a small canister containing a packet of chemicals. In case of; fire the chomicalsare put into the water, a packet into each cylinder. The pump is on the doubt acting princU pie, pr&wing from both cylinders at once and the diff«reut chemicals incetius m the air chamber, carbonic acid gas is generated by which .agency m the water tUe fire is destroyed. The apparatus can be; had m many size with a capacity equal to almost any emergency. For ihe purpose of the experiment on Saturday, a large wooden shed, opeu at one aide, was «rect«d. The inside was well saturated with pitch andkeroseno, and a quantity of shavings ahtf other cotnbustable matter was strewn about on the ground. Immediately after the structure ;was fired the, flames leaped many; f«et m the air, and their • (Bup'ptession . seemed: almost, an impossibility, having to all appearance got too rood a hold. The extinguisher was brought to bear, and a small 'jet of the chemically charged water from a dirainutivH nozzle was directed on the flames with a mostdeeided aud instantaneous .fetiult Other trials were given and proved equally successful. 'f he onlookers were surprised beyond measure and wtife ijniversally .satisfied. They^i^ere unanimous m their verdict an to the undoubted effect iveness'of the " Climax," proclaiming it the greatest success m the department- of fire extinguishers '■■. they had ever seen. A trial was also given ; at Hamilton m the pad- ' ilock at the rear of the Wa|kato Times. Buildiuga. It was m all respects sue? ce'ss'fu), A number of casks filled with light >vood and saturated with kerosene and tar were filted up and ignited. When t'he fife had obtained a gftod hold, the hose waa.turued on, and the flames as if by magic. ' A lartte number of people witnessed the trial and expressed their entire approval. The experiments weie carried out by .Mr Longland of the firm Bf Messrs Porter auS Co. ; of Auckland, the Auckland agents for the " Climax.'" The Auckland Fife Brigade will snbject the appar&tus to a crusical test at the , next, fire m Aiickland, which, judging by the frequency of such occu-euces m that thriving city, should not be "long. We have no "doubt that their popularity will ba so established m Waikato before many months thai they will ,be found m every hotel and private, house which can afford them. * .
