Manawatu Standard ( PUBLISH ED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast . SATURDAY, JANUARY 23, 1886. RAILWAY, MISMANAGEMENT.
Two prominent features m the t mismanagement of our railways ; (says an Auckland paper) are non-issuing ; of tickets 'till within a few minutes of the, departure of the trains, and the refusal to issue return tickets, except on Saturdays. In getting ordinary tickets, pas sehgers are put to great inconvenience from the scramble "that has to be made at the ticket window, consequent upon the crovyding there, m many of people anxious to obtain their;, tickets m time. In Australia and everywhere else, where proper railway -management" obtains,* tickets— both ordinary" arid 1 return — are issued at all hours during which the railway offices are open to the public, and thus. inconvenience is obviated, and the railway department is correspondingly benefit ted. In New 1 Zealand,' the railway authorities,' either from incompefencv or obstinacy, do not appear to study public convenience at all, hence, the incessant well-founded complaints, made against them from all parts of the colony. W|iy,does not the Minister fbV tußlic Works 1 perceive- -th'e pro priety of reforming, his department; when he must be;. fully ; aware, of so many existing,, defects m the, working thereof. If the officers to whom rail, way management is entrusted 'are m any way incompetent, let them be superseded by men wljo possess the requisite ; qualifications. for positions of that description rather than continue m office.
