J Salvation Army Case. # To-day m the Police Court three defendants named respectively Edward Hughes, John Swallow, and John Mahony, were charged on the information of Captain Buckingham of the S9lvation Army, with a breach of the Police Offonces Act, by interfering with the ordinary conduct of religious ser vices at Ashurst. Mr Hankins appeared for the informant, and Mr Staite ror the defendants. Prosecutor deposed to holding services at Ashtirst which were disturbed by conduct of defendants m talking. They were asked to desist, but continued. They were then asked to leave the room. The objectiouoble conduct was still persisted m. They were advised to go or they would be summoned. Finally a general fight took place. Prosecutor was cross-examined by accused's counsel, aud denied that the meeting on Tuesday was a "free and easy "one. A man named Keeue had also 'disturbed the proceedings. Notwithstanding the interruption the' meeting was proceeded with, but its harmony was much disturbed by defen dants' behaviour. . ' Win. Francis gave corroborative evidence. He had himself asked the accused to discontinue their unseemly conduct. Win. Blasket deposed to the conduct of tho accused as calculated to disturb the meeting. They were talking and laughing very loudly. Frank Keene, for the defence, said he was " a general rouse-about." He was at the meeting at Ashurst when the alleged disturbance took place. When the Captain- was selling hymn-books the defendant Hughes asked if they would •• give tick." This remark caused a general laugh. Win. Johnston deposed that he was present at the meeting ; saw the defendants there, but they were not making a disturbance. ; John Harrison gave evidence to' a similar effect. ' The accused gave a general denial of the charge. ; His Worship lhought that m the face of the conflicting evidence given he could not convict the accused, and the .charge ivonld be dismissed without saying who was right. He must say that direct false evidence had been given on one side or the other. At the Police Court this morning Meerrs Lowes and Bellve were fined £2 2s 6d each, including costs, for fnrious riding. ■ The Awahuri Race : Committee have generously made a present of £5 to the funds of the Awahnri school. During the Wellington discussion on the liquor return at ihe Hospital Committee, a member asked the Chairman what " star " brand was that was consumed m the Hospital. The Chairman replied he could not tell, but ho believed it made some people see " a thousand stars "sometimes. , The s.B. Rimutakn, which left Wellington on the 17th December, sailed from Rio de Janeiro for London oa the 7th inst., her cargo of frozen meat at that time being m good condition. The ship Hurunui has been admitted to pratique. Miss Welchman, the typhoid fever patient, was to be allowed ashore today. The Auckland Rationalist newspaper is to be resuscitated and carried on by a limited liability company. '■ W. J. Newton, a fanner residing at Pleasant Point, Fouth Canterbury, attempted to commit suicide yesterday by shooting himself, and afterwards hacking his throat with a bread knife . He is not dead, but lies m a critical' state. ' The Mayor of Mar ton, m response to a public requisition, has proclaimed tomorrow a public holiday. Miss Dobie's murder was forcibly recalled to the mind of the inhabitants of Opunaki the other day (says tho corres- . pondent of the Taranakl Herald,) when Iwi was escorted into towu on the identical black home which Tv Tuhi was on when he committed the murder. It further appeareo that Iwi was a brother of Tuhi. The family seem undesirable residents m the district. Mr W. J. Steward, M.H.R., who has just returned from a visit to Australia, writeß to the Waimate Times that there is not a word of truth, in the statement that he has inherited a large sum of money. Says yesterday's Chronicle : — Each member of the Representative Chamber of the New Zealand Legislature had better begin to seriously put his house m order.
