Sir Julius Yogel Interviewed.
The following are extracts from the report of an interview between Sit Sir Julius Yogel and a reporter of the Auckland Herald : — ■ With, reference to an announcement recently made that Government contemplated purchasing landed estates, with a vi9w tojsub-division and re-sale, has, any scheme jbeen' formulated to carry out these objects ? Sir Julius: This subject has of course often been discussed, and as regards a portion jof it, dealing with small cottage holdings, the Gqverninent made certain proposals last session. I do not think, jioweyer, that it can be said any scheme dealing 'comprehensively with the subject had been formulated! excepting m a Bill introduced by Sir George Grey last session. The question is receiving careful consideration. ! . , s ,< Is there any intention on the part of Government to resume assisted imniigration m any form ? " • Sir J&lius : A portion of passage money of farmers with their , families, who give proof that they are bringing: out capital with them, is> being paid. This principle is beinw tried to a limited; 'extent. lum not aware that Government propose any other f prin of assisted immigration. Is thpre any likelihood of the progress of the; North Island' Trunk Bailway being arrested owing to the threatened determation of Government to appropriate 'North' Island Trunk Railway loan ofjone million temporarily for general purposes. I Sit Julius :, Nothing that has been pro- , I posed m connection with the North island Tfrunk Loan can delay the progress [of the pilway. Th<» resolution carried by Captain Russell is the lamentable cause df delay m the progress of the works.; As regards the loan itself, I may add 1 am . making such temporary arrangements as will enable Parliament when it meets to substitute another loan for oth ! er ; purposes,/ and to .declare' by legislation that the North Island Tritnk loan shall be devoted only to its intended objects'. -'-•-■' '. : . ..:•_ . Is there any intention of Government introdiicing legislation m the direction of modified protection. , Sir juliud : The '. Customs ,-■ revenue is falling off "owing to" caused' not satisfactory, such as the reduced consumption of alcojhol and leas yieUi.jsf ad ' valqrem duties consequent upon reduced prices. In selecting items to maintain the ,i;eveni ey Governm.erjt thjnk they should not be unmindful of the interests of local ,j>rodu( ers. Government do not desire to introduce a Protective policy. .The .tariff is already formed on lines intended to give Ideal producers encouragement, 'and there is no reason- for disturbing* this policy which has so > long prevailed; .-'■■: , ; .. ; Do jGovemment intend to .take any further steps toward, facilitating the establishment of a South Sea Islands Trading Company other than already effected by the inauguration of the Islands, mail se'rviciß ? , Sir Julius : I do not think Government will take further steps m this matter unless they are strongly moved to do so by the expressed wishes of a numerous section off the community. They still, however, I think, believe that it was a great misfortune their previous proposals m (tii is direction were received with so much i indifference. , Have you any intention, Sir Julius; of I addre'ssmgj'our constituents of Auckland prior'to returning to. Wellington ? i Sir, Julius: I have no intention of volunteering to address a public meeting at Aiickland, but I would' deem it my | duty !to deter to a generally expressed jthat I should do so. In my present state |of health I . ■■ oould not • hope to do more. than to. .address, a,, meeting that would be willing to give me a patient hearing.
