PALMERSTON ROVERS V. WOOD,- --! ._,_, ,, VILLE. ■ ■"■ '
I The above match took place last Saturi day notwithstanding that the Rovers had. tp make up their team at the eleventh boiir, so thUt they would not disappoint their. Woodville rivals. A start was irikde at half past seven, arriving at Woodville at half- past ten m a conveyance of Mr Button's, and commenced shortly, a/ter to play. The Woodville team elected Mr Edwards apd the Rovers.Mr I. J. Salmon; to the sp6st* of captain, Edwards winning the toss decided to bat and sent m Seymour and Bowe to the*bowlihgot Luxford and Roberts. The play of Seymour was very scoodjhe making the r only. double score on his side, 10-runsj when- he was caught off Roberts by Luxford, and after a f£w * bv«rs' 'Nfewth' tooic the* Mb'all^afi Robert's end, and soon brought the innings to a close, he securing four wickets iiTthreee overs for one run, a most splendid performances indeed. The feilding was almost impossible, being on very rough ground, and the pitch on cocoanut inatting. t The feilding of William Dixon iong stop was very" good indeed, only three by«s being obtained, that of Watson and Sfcallard m the long field, also of Salmon at the wickets, the innings closinh for the small score of -Bi. Foe' the Rovers; Salmon: and Watson now took the batting, Seymour and Mowatt bowling, and both began playing, very steady, when Watson,, was clean bowled, by Mowatt, WiUiara Dixon taking his place, when Salai6n was' caught by Edwards off Seymour, after' "'making seven, Luxford filling his place, when Dixon was bowled by Mowatt for five, the score standing at three wickets r for thirtyr-one runs, a tie with '■■ Woodville. Lambert' -Yetired with a duck, and : Stallard and Luxford* ran the" score up, Stallard being the next one to go with a nicely played innings of eight, the remaining five batsmen only scoring one run betweeii them i' when Luxford was caught by ; Edwards ; off Mowatt for a well and steady played innings of sixteen,' being thelast out, ; and the innings closed for fifty-five, runs, or twenty : four runs tv the good. Both teams then adjourned to Mr Murphy's and partook of a .very good lunch provided By Woodville team' "After lunch Seymour and Francis took their pltices at the wickets, to the bowling of Luxford and Newth, and the score began to creep up when Salraou took the ball from Ntjwth, .and . began with slows, although the ground was too rough for the out fielders to run on; Mowatt being the highest with a well hit eleven, . and Seymour with eight. The fielding of some of the Rovers wants improving and I hope that they will attend to this pait of the game. * The Woodville second innings 'closed for fifty. two runs, the .Rovers wanting twenty: nine runs to win. > William Dixon and .Salmon went m -with Mouatt and Edwards bowling, and it did not take long for JDixon and Salmon to makeup the required number, Salmon playing as he liked off both bowlers, leaving Dixon to dp the running, and after four over and two balls, Salmon made the winning hit for three over the fence, leaving Dixon with five not but, and Salmon not' oat for nineteen, which included one six, two threes, two doubles, and two singles, with five extras, the Rovers thus winning their fourth match "this season by ten wicketa.
