The Stratford Fire.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) New Plymouth, Saturday. Messrs Bobinson and R. Bayley, who went over the district ravaged by the fire, have returned to town. From a report published by the latter m the Herald the damage is not half of what was originally estimated. At the utmost extent it has not been over £4000, and this includes houses which were insured, cattle which are daily returning, log fences which were only put up to burn, and paddocks of grass m which the grass is alre^dy.springihg up. The whole matter is being thoroughly investigated here by competent persons, and when finished a report will be published how the money is distributed. The Mayor of Wanganui and Mr McGuire are now m New Plymouth, when, no doubt, the whole mattor will be amicably arranged. Subscriptions received here up to date are £820, including Sargood, Kwen, & Co., Auckland, £5 ss. The above- amount does not include the Wellington Post's £100, nor that raised at Wanganui and Marton.
