A number of Hungarian gentlemen are taking steps m the direction of setling two hundred families on British < , territory m New Guinea. The question has been submitted to the Home authorities. It is understood that Mr Murray ] Smith, Agent-General for Victoria, is notopposed to the proposal. With reference to the refusal of Germany to make any reduction m the cost of press cablegrams, it is probable that 'the various cabje^ companies interested will reimburse Germany for any loss sustained by such reductions. The Colonial Office having received a communication from -the Colonies re- ! lative to the lowering of the Samoan flag by a" party of marines from the German man-of-war Albatross, has replied to the effect that there is no reason to believe that Germany intends to annex Samoa. Mr. "W. L, Jackson, M.P. for Leeds, : has been, appointed Secretary , to the Treasury. ' ; " Madrid, Jan. 12. News is to hand from Carthagena of an abortive attempt at a Republican rising which has taken place there. Although the disturbance was not of a serious nature, the Governor of the city was wounded. "
